Do you remember when twitter first came along?
I do, it was suddenly being talked about everywhere so I went and checked it out and I remember thinking, what kind of idiot’s life is so empty that they’d follow this? … or in the more cultured poetic words of Alexander Pope …
As to be hated needs but to be seen;”
I’d seen twitter, it was a vice, and I decried it for the pointless thing that it was.
However, a few months ago a mate of mine @timyowie, found the account I’d created when I was looking at twitter and started following me (even though I wasn’t posting anything) so I followed him back….
… then I found out about this bike ride that Helen Skelton of the BBC was doing down to the South Pole and the only way I could follow it was via blogs and her tweets, so I followed her as well …
Next I found myself following several bloggers like the FatCyclist and JillOutside so I could get real time race updates from events they were competing in.
I started following triathlete Paula Findlay as she prepared for her races and endurance rider Bill Martin as he competed in 24 hour endurance races … Yep, I was well and truly on the slippery slope to the embrace …
We first endure, then pity, then embrace.”
