A year of so ago I first read an article about bikerafting in Alaska and the whole idea just swept me up and got me very, very excited. In fact it got me thinking about a route I had read about in an out of print cycling book – a route down the west coast of Tasmania …
Ever since then I have found myself subconsciously drawn to the idea. I find myself tracing the tracks down the west coast of Tasmania and thinking … surely? maybe? could it be done?
I find myself cruising the internet thinking about gear, Surly bikes, bob trailers, Alapacka Rafts … it’s all there just needing to be brought together …
My trip out to the Pieman Heads the other week was part of the inexorable pull I feel to explore this area by bike. It gave me a chance to size up the Pieman River crossing and the state of the tracks north of there. The answer was that it all looked possible. Very possible indeed.
So this week I sat down and plotted a route … 250km would get me from Strahan to Smithton …
I think I could do that over the Christmas – New Year break? surely? maybe? I could try …
… or maybe sometimes it’s just nice to dream.
